Chapter 69: Now—Enter the Brat Researcher!

“All right, you are up next, Cain. Please lie down on this bed and put on this device. We’ll measure the quality of your mana particles.”

“Got it.”

“And you, Altina, please lie on this bed. We will be examining the effect of holy sword usage on the human body.”

“Okay.”

We were in a dreary white room, devoid of any decorative ornaments or stylish furnishings. The only things present were the multiple beds for test subjects to lie on, and an array of large magical measuring devices made to scrutinize them down to the smallest detail.

This room was located in the research institute attached to the Academy Town university. As its name suggested, Academy Town was fully equipped with facilities to support all manner of academic pursuits. It housed elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as preschools and daycare centers for early childhood education. Naturally, this also included a university and graduate school as well, boasting cutting-edge facilities for advanced magical research. Well, perhaps putting it that way was a bit backward, as the university and its research facility had existed first, with Academy Town growing outward from them.

With that being the case, the oldest facility in Academy Town was actually this research institute.

Today, Cain and the others were assisting in one of the university’s research projects—or rather, they were the ones who had requested the research.

“All right. Cain, Altina, thank you for your cooperation. Please rest while we prepare for the next measurements. Oh, would you care for some coffee?”

“Sure, I’ll take some.”

“Me too, please.”

“Got it.”

The lab coat-wearing university researcher prepared for the next experiment while preparing coffee at the same time. The faint aroma of instant coffee spread through the room.

The researcher in charge of us today was a woman named Brigitta, from the Faculty of Fundamental Mana Properties, Department of Generated Mana Particles. She wore glasses, and her long hair quite clearly hadn’t been tended to in quite some time. She seemed a bit worn out.

“Umm, Ms. Brigitta? I don’t mean to intrude, but... Are you feeling all right? You don’t look very well.”

“Oh, Lisalinde. Thank you for your concern. I’m fine. It’s just that my average sleep time over the past five days has been only two hours. It’s no big deal...”

She said it so casually, but two hours was far too little. It was no wonder why she had those dark circles under her eyes.

“Stop drinking caffeine and get some sleep!”

We shuddered. Complaining about high school exams seemed trivial compared to this.
